A photograph taken by my friend Ajene Moss on Cinco de Mayo 2005 in Oakland CA is the starting point for this work. It depicts a nervous mother walking by a man spray-painting "Fuck SSL" (South Side Locs, a local gang).  The wall is marked by unintentional blocky shapes: layers of different colours of paint. No doubt the result of a 'dialogue' that takes place between gangs or taggers and with the shop owner. It becomes a sort of abstract automatic art.  As this mother instinctively reaches for her daughter's hand, as they pass a Norteño gangster flagrantly breaking the law, on a day of unity division is captured between worker, shopkeeper and lumpen-proletariat.

The painted wall was, as faithfully to the photograph as possible, recreated in 3 european cities during the summer of 2010. The original photo was displayed alongside.
