The Bush Bazaar
Video (44:50), Chapters in a series of videos about my experience in Afghanistan
Kabul, Afghanistan
April 2015

I travelled to Kabul, Afghanistan in August of 2013 and again in April 2015. I made my way to a market place in the centre of the city named after the former US President.

Blending my own story along with local Afghan histories, documentary footage, music, and voice over, this non-narrative video muses on the intersection of the personal and the political. Decades old turtles in my compound, the former German Club; former Afghan President Karzai's first mobile phone on display in the National Museum, museum ransacked by the Taliban, yet still filled antiquities dating to some of the oldest civilisations in the history of humankind; the then recent murder of Farkhunda; migration; the century old Afghan past time, banned by the Taliban, of kite flying; the boy 'bacha bazi' dancers'... all become players.

But significantly, it provides a new and alternate portrait of an intensely complex and beautiful place.
